As you make the decision to adopt, this checklist will help you better plan the next few steps ahead. Please consult your child placing adoption agency regarding the specific procedures you should follow in their program. The list below is intended solely as an initial guide to help those families beginning the process.

NEXT STEPS CHECKLIST
1. Discuss desired timetable for adoption (varies by country).

2. Discuss desired location/country for adoption.

3. Discuss family budget and cost outline for the process.

4. Identify the attorney or adoption agencies that provide the desired service.

5. Interview agencies/attorneys and select one to handle your adoption.

6. Select a home study agency. This process may begin before you hire an adoption agency/attorney, as long as you are certain you desire to adopt.

7. For International Adoptions, apply for an INS form I-600a.. You may download the form at: www.uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/i-600a.htm

8. For International Adoptions, apply for U.S. Passports. Start early, passports are valid for ten years.

9. Get official certified copies of your birth certificates and marriage license.

10. Plan to have medicals done for yourselves. You should also check with your employer and medical insurer regarding coverage for your new child.

11. For International Adoptions, plan to employ a notary for certification of numerous forms and documents.

In International Adoptions, the paperwork and waiting process for adoptions varies country by country. Be patient and flexible. Your adoption agency will help you chart this course. The end result is well worth the paper trail.
